Here is a recent review of the Tasting room by SF Chronicle Wine Critic, Esther Mobley that sums up who were are. Rock Wall Wine Co. has a fascinating history behind it – not only because the winery is located in an old airplane hangar that was part of the Naval Air Station Alameda, but also because its president and winemaker Shauna Rosenblum has deep roots in the East Bay wine scene. Her father Kent Rosenblum was a pioneering urban winemaker who launched Rosenblum Cellars in Oakland in 1978. Over the next few decades, he helped bring California Zinfandel to international fame, popularizing a rich, ripe style that came to dominate the category in the 1980s and ‘90s. After selling Rosenblum Cellars to Diageo in 2008, the Rosenblum family launched Rock Wall, this time with daughter Shauna at the helm. Father and daughter ran the venture together until his death in 2018 at age 74. But Rock Wall has always been Shauna Rosenblum’s vision, anyway. Inside the winery, fermentation tanks are labeled with names of her favorite heroines, fictional and real: There’s Arya and Ayesha, Katniss and Oprah. Her artist husband has created murals that appear throughout the space. And, most important, Rosenblum has been forging her own path as a winemaker that sets her apart from her father. Her wines are typically lower in alcohol and higher in acidity than the Zins that made Rosenblum Cellars famous. That food-friendly, quaffable profile makes these wines ideal for sipping in the scenic Rock Wall tasting space. An indoor tasting room with a long bar – located next to the winery hangar in a double-wide, but you wouldn’t know it – leads out onto spacious patio space with a prime view of the bay and the San Francisco skyline. Conveniently, the restaurant Scolari’s operates a window right next to the tasting room, so guests can order pizzas and salads to enjoy alongside a glass of wine while they take in the sights. As of 2019, Rock Wall also operates a second tasting option called the Reserve Room, inside the winery hangar. Visits here are by reservation only and include more in-depth guidance from the Rock Wall staff – frequently, from Rosenblum herself – for $40 to $100 per person. WHAT TO TRY: Rosenblum produces 42 different wines for Rock Wall, ranging from familiar types (including, of course, Zinfandel) to esoterica (like Charbono and Tannat). You can order glasses or guided flights in the tasting room. Start with a taste of sparkling wine, which has become a Rock Wall specialty. Try the tropical Pinot Blanc brut from Mendocino County or the cranberry-colored sparkling Zinfandel. Look for the bright, floral Fiano, a southern Italian white variety, and the Mama’s Reserve, a white Rhone blend that’s uncommonly crisp and fresh. But Rock Wall’s real range can be seen in its selection of red wines, which include fun blends and highly serious single-vineyard wines. Some of Rosenblum’s most intriguing creations are the Holbrook Mitchell Vineyard Cabernet Franc, the Maggie’s Vineyard Zinfandel and the Rigg Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, from a backyard vineyard in suburban Castro Valley.
