Sapphire Hill is our testament to following your dreams … no matter how outrageous they may seem.
My husband Chris and I have always been wine lovers and in the early 90’s, while living in the Bay area, our favorite past time was heading out to wine country. We loved the beauty, the history, the people and of course the excellent wines. However, it was one of those elusive places where we wondered how in the world we could ever make a living in the small towns that make up the area.
After moving from California and taking several vacations back to the area, we again wondered how we could live in such a beautiful place and make our dream come true.
Chris spent his career working for big corporations and I’ve spent the last 25 years working with morning radio personalities across the country from wherever corporate America would move us at the time.
One evening Chris came home and said he was tired of the corporate life and moving around all the time. He wanted to love going to work everyday and when I asked what his passion was, he said he always dreamed of working at a winery. My first reaction was, “Hmm … I bet there are a lot of people who’d love to work at a winery; but, if that’s what you’d like to do, go get a job at a winery!” Much to my surprise, 5 months later, we were giving away our “stuff” and moving out to beautiful Healdsburg to live out our dream. Chris became the CFO of a family owned winery and then began his own winery consulting firm while I continued with my career in radio.
The opportunity to purchase Sapphire Hill came up in Fall of 2010 and we decided that our love of wine and the winery business was a passion that we both shared and something we could happily do for the rest of our lives.
Sapphire Hill’s tasting room is located in the heart of Northern Sonoma County in downtown Healdsburg. Our vision is to specialize in hand-crafted, limited-production wines that showcase the Russian River, Dry Creek and Alexander Valley appellations in a fun and exciting environment.
We loved the Sapphire Hill logo as we felt it depicted the three beautiful wine regions that all intersect in Healdsburg. In the future, we’re looking forward to adding vintages from the Cabernet and Chardonnay varietals on our property in the Alexander Valley hills, as well as from the many hand-selected area vineyards that are known for producing excellent wines!
Our wines are currently available at our tasting room in Healdsburg, on-line, and in San Francisco bay area and Southern California restaurants.
Thanks for stopping by our site. Hopefully, we’ll someday meet in person and we’ll be a part of sharing each other’s dreams along with some great wine!
Our Wines
Sapphire Hill Estate Vineyards
The vineyards were selected in 1989 to produce the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley on the original homestead of Lucy and Levi Grove, who acquired 120 acres in 1869 from John Cooper who was granted the El Molino Ranchero by General Vallejo. The vineyards are located on the edge of the morning fog line that stretches through the valley and allows for cooler morning temperatures but warmer in the afternoon to produce rich ripe fruit. The vineyard is approximately 1.5 miles from the Rochioli vineyard just across the river and is known for its outstanding aromas and lush ripe fruit. These vineyards are sustainably farmed with the utmost care into each vine.
Ketcham Estate
The Ketcham Estate was planted 15 years ago and is located in the heart of Russian River on Eastside road. This vineyard was planted with the intention of producing some of the best and richest Pinot Noir in the world. The vines are near the water table to stretch their roots while the rich loam dirt gives great character to the wines. The Ketcham Estate has a who’s who among producers including Williams Selyem, Michael Browne (Kosta-Browne), and Gary Farrell.
Winberrie Vineyard
The Winberrie Vineyard is a tiny parcel planted in 1905 that produces some of the richest and ripest Zinfandel berries in the world. The vineyard was dry farmed for many years and today uses minimal irrigation.
Seaton Vineyard
Located at the end of west dry creek is the acclaimed Seaton vineyard, which produces a dark, rich, spicy Zinfandel.
Pine Mountain
This vineyard is over 2,000 feet in elevation at the top of Alexander Valley and produces intense, dark rich Cabernet.
Red Grav Vineyard
This vineyard is named for a single Red Gravenstein Apple tree on the property and produces bright, rich, fruit forward Cabernet.
