Set just off the Pacific, east of the Cascade mountains, Washington state somewhat ‘hides out’ tucked away neatly in North Western America. It borders Oregon but their climates are very different-influenced by what side of the mountains vineyards lie. Washington state is on the leeward east, meaning it receives considerably less rainfall making irrigation necessary. A blessing for the winemakers.

Most of Washingtons AVAs (American Viticultural Area) are within the Columbia Valley AVA; Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope. Others are the Columbia Gorge that separates Washington state from Oregon.Spokane, Greater Puget Sound (famous for aromatic Riesling and Gerwüztraminer) and the Lake Chelan(pictured).
Horse Heaven Hills. Famous for world class Cabernet Sauvignon. This AVA supplies most of Washington’s wineries with grapes and is most proud of producing five 100 point wines.
Walla Walla valley buzzes with fantastic restaurants, hotels and even better 100 excellent wineries. This scenic region is also home to L’Ecole No 41, a school house turned fine wine producer that is a must visit.
